FUNCTION
As an HSE Apprentice, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of personnel while promoting environmental sustainability within our organisation. Working closely with management and delivery teams, you’ll advise on statutory health, safety, and environmental (SHE) requirements, encompassing a range of responsibilities to safeguard our workforce and mitigate environmental impact. You will attend Gateshead College (Automotive and Engineering) in Team Valley on day release each week to complete the theoretical element of your apprenticeship.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the HSE department with the creation, delivery and monitoring of HSE plans which underpin the HSE strategy and supports the achievement of our operational objectives
- Participate in the development of the management system and participate in projects to improve the level of its effectiveness.
- Build and develop effective, collaborative working relationships with the operational leadership and managements teams in order to positively influence their HSE capabilities
- Work with the operational leadership and management teams to improve our safety culture, and to develop a motivational and rewarding working environment that will facilitate the achievement of business objectives and company values
- Ensure the delivery of the company’s HSE KPIs and report monthly on progress. Where areas of non-conformance or areas for improvement are identified ensure that these are raised and escalated as necessary to gain compliance and improvement
- Support and encourage positive employee engagement and communication processes at all levels
- Support HSE initiatives and projects outside of assigned areas of responsibility as allocated by the QHSE Manager.
- Support the operational teams in the management of incidents and near misses including incident investigation and the application of HSE guidance in relation to RIDDOR reportable events or other notifiable events with the relevant enforcing authorities.
- Prepare and maintain records / databases relating to health, safety and environmental matters
- Provide support to ensure that policies, procedures and working practices are safe and compliant with legal and ISO certification requirements
- Keep up to date and research industry issues, updates, and best practice
- Identify hazards within the organisation and how they could be potentially harmful to personnel
- Advise on how to deal with hazards in line with workplace and legal requirements
- General administration duties

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
GCSE English Language or equivalent (Level 4 to 9 / Grade A to C)
GCSE Mathematics or equivalent – (Level 4 to 9 / Grade A to C)
